Life Coaching and Assertiveness for Healthcare Professionals
Since the start of the pandemic the demand for coaching has increased greatly. The rise in demand has been notable in one sector in particular – health.
I have been contacted by Hospital Consultants, GPs, Psychiatrists, Dentists, Nurses, and other medical professionals in the healthcare sector such as osteopaths and podiatrists, many of whom have been greatly challenged and impacted since the outbreak of Covid.
They have and still are giving their all to provide the best care possible to patients in the most difficult circumstances, often at great cost to themselves.
The key issues have been assertiveness, conflict, and time management, whilst some have taken the opportunity to hone their presentation and public speaking skills, vital for speaking opportunities such as lectures, and for meetings, and interviews skills. It is important that healthcare professionals feel able to communicate with assertiveness and confidence.
If any of these resonate with you, book a FREE 20-minute introductory conversation on Zoom or phone. Please email me to arrange a convenient time to talk.
Issues Facing Health Sector Personnel
These are some of the issues healthcare coaching clients have raised:
1. The nonstop demand and expectations to work all hours without a reasonable break
2. Difficulties in asking for needs to be met
3. Being pushed back when asking staff to help, and being subject to reverse delegation
4. The need to set boundaries and to say no
5. Dealing with verbally aggressive & other difficult behaviours, from colleagues and patients
6. Managing disagreement and conflict
7. Lack of support generally for themselves and staff
8. How to give difficult feedback and ask staff to carry out a task or behave differently
9. Relationships with family and friends
10. Taking care of themselves & their well-being
How many of these can you relate to?
Many medical professionals have spoken of how they contracted Covid themselves, especially early on, when working with Covid patients, or simply from being in an environment where they are more exposed to the disease. It has also proven difficult to feel able to take off sufficient time to recover fully before returning to work, precisely because of the pressures on the health service.
Inevitably, healthcare staff have witnessed a great deal of suffering, which has in turn taken its toll on them. The stresses have been constant, and relentless.
The benefits of 1-2-1 coaching for healthcare professionals
You may well spend much of your time listening. Patients, families, staff talk to you – whom do you turn to?
1-2-1 coaching offers you a confidential space to talk openly and in confidence, to someone who has your best interests at heart.
I have taken a particular interest in the impact of the pandemic personally and since so many clients from all walks of life have spoken to me about the effect it’s had on them. I have also taken a training with my professional body, the Association for Coaching, on “Coaching Through Bereavement in a Pandemic”.
You can use coaching support in many ways, including:
- to enhance confidence and assertiveness in communicating with colleagues, other departments, patients, and their families, dealing both with sensitive situations as well as difficult behaviours
- to identify ways to manage stress and time in a constantly pressured work environment including handling interpersonal relationships
- to manage personal relationships with family and friends
Coaching is online via Zoom or by phone or in person. Discover my booking and fees options here or email me.
