Settling in, surviving and succeeding as a student

Settling in
University and College life is an exciting time, bringing many opportunities, including learning and academic achievement, independence and a sense of freedom, a new environment, new friends, and a different way of living. Yet becoming a university or college student can also be a time of great challenges.
Many students feel alone, even homesick at times. It can be hard to acclimatise from the familiarity of home and the friends you’ve known, to a new unfamiliar environment with people you do not know, combined with the pressures of academic life.
Suddenly you are handling everything yourself, if you’ve moved away from home. You have to be organised, to manage everyday tasks in life such as washing, shopping, cooking, and cleaning. You will want to get on with flatmates and have cleaning rotas that are fair. You need to schedule time for your academic work, get to lectures on time (in person or online) and meet deadlines for essays and assignments.
There are new relationships to create, friendships and partners, and sometimes these don’t work out. There may be peer pressures to go partying, drinking, and staying out late when you know you’ve work to do and an early tutorial the next morning.
With the often-conflicting pressures from family and friends, the demands of academic life can feel overwhelming and it’s important to have the confidence and skills to manage them.
Surviving
As time goes on and you settle in, you will want to maintain an organised schedule for your academic life and feel on top of your personal life with a good study-life balance.
It’s important to be able to speak up for yourself with other students, tutors, house mates and perhaps parents, and to be able to ask for help if, for example, you feel physically or emotionally unwell or are feeling troubled by the cost of living and getting into debt. Have courage to seek professional help: most campuses have an onsite counselling service. It isn’t a weakness but a strength to be able to ask.
Throughout you may be faced with a multitude of choices: which modules to take, work placements to apply for, student clubs and activities to join. You may have so much work on your plate, you’re not sure what to do first.
There may be difficulties where you live, conflicts in the student residences, noisy and messy students. In these situations it would be helpful to assert yourself and seek solutions either with the individual(s) involved or to find an alternative, such as another place to stay.
