The benefits of early preparation
Good preparation not only helps you do well on the day, it helps you feel more confident beforehand and at interview. There’s lots you can do even before you put in an applicaton or know which role or organisation you’re applying to. For example, make a list of your key competencies and note an example for each that superbly illustrates your skills and qualities and demonstrates your achievements. This will assist you in writing an application as well as when you get that call or email inviting you for interview. It helps pre-empt the eleventh hour searching for examples and great stories (evidence) to tell.
The Don’ts of Interviews
Don’t leave your portfolio at home
Keep a list to refer to each time you go for an interview of everything you’ll need, documents the company asked to see, previous work as relevant such as an innovative design you’ve created, Powerpoint presentation, bag or briefcase, mobile and more…Ensure you have everything ready the previous day. This way you’ll look, and feel, ready on the day.
Don’t let your nerves get the better of you
Having taken such care up until now, be sure to make the best of on the day. Arrive in good time, show your enthusiasm from the outset. Avoid fidgeting and other distracting habits like tapping fingers or feet. Don’t allow nerves to cause you to overtalk, waffle, brag, or speak at the pace of a hundred metre race! Rather share calmly your experience, knowledge, skills and motivation.
Don’t talk negatively
Talking negatively about your current employer, your colleagues, your boss or your profession will wave a red flag to the interviewer. If you’re unhappy at work and are asked why you’re leaving, turn it around to talk about positive reasons, such as wanting to develop, and your strong interest in this role and organisation.

"After a number of unsuccessful job interviews, I realised I needed some interview coaching. Lucy was instrumental in helping me secure the job I wanted. She really took the time to understand the role I was being interviewed for, and to ask me pertinent questions relating to my experience and skills. Lucy's approach was very supportive and non-judgemental and she provided me with constructive feedback in our interview practice sessions, that helped me improve my performance enormously.
