As we move into a new season, it’s a time both to reflect back and to look ahead. So here are 3 quotes from very different famous names from the past to set you thinking and spur you into action for the future.
1. “Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground.” Theodore Roosevelt (US President 1901–1909)
These inspiring words strike a fascinating balance between not losing sight of your dreams whilst having a footing in reality. Sometimes people discourage you from pursuing your goals and dreams: they think they are beyond your reach, or selfishly don’t want you to pursue them since they clash with their own agendas.
Keep those dreams: rather than keeping them in mind, write them down. Define what they mean in practice and make a step by step plan to attain them, steps that are realistic and so achievable.
2. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Lao Tzu (Ancient Chinese Philosopher, Founder of Taoism)
Taking the first step can be tough, the hardest step of all. Ask yourself how often you have procrastinated, put something off because it feels too big, too complex, too time-intense, too important? Perhaps you can’t work out what to do, or the time never seems quite right, or you fear you will fall.
Yet once you take the first step, it is likely to flow, and you will wonder why you waited. So decide when to take it, log it in your calendar, and do it!
3. “How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?” Dr. Seuss (Author, political cartoonist, poet, filmmaker. 1904-1991)
Humour is a great tool to drive home a message and make it linger! Time flies and is a good reason not to delay your goals. If you don’t make and start your plan of action at an early date, you may not reach your goals at all. Albeit your 5 or even 10-year goal may sound a long way off, without a timeline it’s easy to pass those “sell by dates”. So just as you would make a plan to achieve a goal at the end of this week, start sketching your timelines for your long term goals.
It’s a great policy too to make an early start each day. Otherwise, before you know it, the day is gone and you have little to show for it!
