At this time of year, I like to write a blog that has a lighter feel yet contains powerful messages.
- “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it, is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”
My first quote is from William Arthur Ward (1921-1994), a US writer of articles, poems and meditations
How many times have you felt you wanted to show appreciation, thank someone, say how well someone has done…yet held back and said nothing? Perhaps you felt awkward, didn’t know what to say, the moment passed and it seemed difficult to go back to.
In my role as a coach, clients often tell me they hear about it at work when things don’t go well but don’t get feedback or a simple ‘thank you’ when they put in extra effort or do a great job. Most people respond positively to ‘well done’ and ‘great job’.
Thought 1: Whom would you like to thank, congratulate or say ‘great job’?
- “You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.”
My second quote comes from Dr Seuss (1904-1991), the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel, children’s author, political cartoonist, screenwriter and more, who sold an astonishing 600 million plus books!.
Very apt for Life Coaching, since the implication is to encourages you to think for yourself, rather than follow down the paths others direct you to go down. Often families, friends, colleagues or managers have their own agenda for you, as to what they want you to do, or assume limitations to what you might achieve.
It’s important to spend an hour or so from time to time reviewing your goals, considering what you’ve achieved and what you’d like to achieve. Then write down the steps to get there and the date you’ll arrive. A useful exercise for the close of one year to usher in the next.
Thought 2: What key goal will you set for 2020?
- “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”
My third quote is from Mark Twain (1835-1910), author, humourist, entrepreneur.
Once you know what you want to do, where you want to be, you need a plan, a strategy to take you there. You also need those qualities of persistence, determination, tenacity. You hold on to the strength of character to achieve what you set out to do despite the hurdles and challenges that may strew your path -whether it’s a goal you’ll attain after several months or keeping up the practise of something you set for yourself, such as a fitness programme.
Thought 3: What will you persist with in the year 2020?
