What is Life Coaching?
An article by Lucy Seifert, Life Coach London
Coaching was borne out of the concept of improving performance in sport. It is now cascaded across many aspects of life, developing skills for work and career, for performance on stage, in public speaking, for managing relationships and personal life and for leadership.
Coaching is the art of improving performance. Coaching is the art of creating an environment, through conversation and a way of being, that facilitates the process by which a person can move towards desired goals in a fulfilling manner.
Myles Downey
I view coaching as a partnership between coach and client in a climate of trust, honesty, support and encouragement. It is important that it is also developmental and so it may at times feel challenging. As a client, you can choose to bring one immediate topic, such as a difficulty in a personal or work relationship, or a broader issue such as assertiveness, career change or coping with stress, handling public speaking anxiety & becoming a confident presenter. You may want to look generally at your life, both personally and professionally and set goals and plans to achieve them.
As a Life Coach I believe that you are creative and resourceful, and that working together we will be able to:
- clarify your dreams and goals,
- identify what is holding you back,
- find strategies and solutions to overcome the hurdles,
- and plan a route to achieve what you wish for
Sometimes Life Coaching is structured, at others the approach is intuitive. You have the opportunity to learn and grow through activities, self-assessments, conversation, questioning and feedback. We may look at different ways of thinking about things, using right brain creative coaching. There is time for reflection and time for taking action to move you towards your goals.
You will feel continually encouraged and supported in identifying and actioning the steps to attain your goals, and clients tell me how helpful the accountability is in coaching.
Specialist Expertise
As a highly experienced trainer, I offer the opportunity to work with you to develop skills in the areas of specialist knowledge, such as assertiveness, CVs and interviews, conflict resolution, public speaking and time and stress management where you feel this would be helpful.
Life Coaching using the GROW model
A life coach may work intuitively or with a structured approach or combine the two. I like to combine the two and my preferred structured model of Coaching is GROW or TGROW and I think it helpful for you, as the client, to understand the process of the model which in turn gives you greater ownership in the coaching session.
What does TGROW stand for?
- T is for topic, the broad issue the client brings,
- G is for goal, the specific matter the client wants to work on today;
- R is for Reality Check such as where is the client now, what have they done so far, what are their resources, what is stopping them?;
- O is for Options, an explosion of ideas & at this stage quantity rather than quality is important; finally
- W is for Ways Forward, and the creation of an Action Plan that feels both encouraging and manageable for the client.
Life Coaching Tools
Life Coaches use many coaching tools to enable you, the client, to talk, discuss, and view your circumstances and situations from different perspectives, to learn & develop, to problem solve, to make decisions and attain your goals and dreams. I like to use a mix of popular tools such as the Wheel of Life, the GAP Analysis and SMART goals with my own practical & creative exercises to encourage self-discovery, reflection and creativity, using discussion, questioning, feedback and continual encouragement to move you forward towards your goals.
